If you were the oil minister, how would you reduce fuel consumption?

Let's face it. Petroleum is the biggest drain on India's foreign exchange. A sizeable reduction in its consumption would work wonders on the country's trade deficit. The oil ministry's proposal to shut down petrol pumps late night has been shot down,. What would you do, if you were the oil minister, to reduce India's dependence on fuel?

I will start using public transport more often than it is now. I will stop free fuel to all- ministers.other politicians and beaurocrats must pay for the fuel they consume for personal use. I will like to stop Kerosene being smuggled out of to the neighbouring countris. On a larger perspective I will like to concentrate on infra development, increasing use of bio-fuel etc.

every city should have a local metro air-conditioned train...vehicles cost with high mileage should be reduced...if it is affordable people can buy them...public transport should be encouraged...

Taking into consideration the rising fuel prices and the falling Rupee, I would having suggested to take a step which pune took with the help of Sakal newspapers as their media partner. PUNE BUS DAY. We can plan this throughout the nation for atleast a week each major city should follow this for a week example - PUNE BUS WEEK. Requesting or making compulsary for each and every city dweller to take the public transport while going out. This being followed religiously would reduce pollution in the cities at the same time will also reduce the consumption of fuel. We can do this as a trial run for cities like PUNE, followed by MUMBAI, then followed by Nagpur at the same time in other states with their major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Chandigarh etc. The only thing we need is the availability of public transports 24x7. Which doesnot seem like a big problem to me. I wish this can be taken into consideration and proves helpful.
