Do opinion polls really mould voter behaviour or is the Congress simply getting paranoid?

An opinion poll predicting a huge victory for the Aam Aadmi Party in the forthcoming Assembly elections seems to have got the goat of the ruling Congress party in the NCR. While some sections of the party have pooh-poohed the results of the survey, others have cried hoarse in calling for a ban on all such polls on the eve of elections. What is your take? Do opinion polls really influence the way you cast your vote, and are therefore to be taken seriously, in which case a call for a ban on them is justified? Or is the Congress simply getting paranoid about the possibility of some truth in the prediction?

Opinion polls have a miniscule of sample of voters that are capable of responding to the call of the pollster. They are just a crude indicator despite the fact that the predictions come closer to the actual results. If the voting population were to be net savvy and electronic voting takes place in large measure, it is likely that opinion polls like in the US or Canada or UK can be influential of the future outcome and can prove a real threat to whosoever is on the edge. In India banning them either by the government or the Election Commission would be obstructive intervention in the democratic process.

Polls do not influence voters' decision to vote for against a party. They only tell us what the voter has already decided. Just because majority will vote for Party X does not mean I will also vote for it. The writing is on the wall. The Congress has looted the nation. If it loses its voter base, it has nothing, least of all opinion polls, to blame, except itself
