Do Farooq Abdullah's views on women in the workplace smack of sexism?

Here is Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy's response to a question about Justice A K Ganguly: "Now we (men) are even afraid of talking to girls. We are scared now of appointing women secretaries." What do you think about his views? Are they genuine or has the minister indulged in sexism and gender bias in his apparent bid to give the disgraced justice a clean chit?

Dr.Abdullah has always been frank with his views and if at all he has been silent these few days it could be due to "coalition compulsions". What he said about women is not sexist but the truth. The point to be noted is that there is no man's view in all this. Yes cases like the Nirbhaya or the Mumbai mill rape etc., are not the issues. The issue is at the working place. With increasing employment for women at the work place there is every possibility of a superior, if he happens to be a male , to be hauled under sexual harassment case merely on the statement of a women. In india police are ever willing to use very opportunity to make a quick buck. Can we rule out the possibility of a liason between a woman and a policeman to target a man and to blackmail with such charges. It happens all the time in India. We know the situation with SCs and STs. That is why they are shunned by the general public. Once the reservation for seats comes for women they will face the same fate. Women should be careful while making so much noise. It may as well boomerang on them. As some body said. all women are not Sitas and all men are not Ravanas.

Though his comments may appear sexist but in reality they represent some truth. This law like dowry law will get abused causing people to be extra wary and causing less women getting employed over the longer term.

The minister is correct. Media and papers simply do the damage control for the accused with out any evidence or proof. The compliant is safe guarded with out any of reference, but the accused is made public and the image is damaged. FIR is filed on the statement of the compliant. If latter the accused is freed and proved that he is innocent , whether the spoiled image to the accused will be reverted. Hence the same preference given to the compliant should be given to the accused.

I don't think Mr farooq Abdullah's intention behind making these comments was to let off Justice Ganguly or Tejpal. He has simply stated that the fear psychosis in the minds of men employers may lead them to opt for male employees rather than female employees . That all he had said and nothing more should be read into it. Too much is being made out of a innocuous looking statement . He has already apolized for the same
